Orange Energy Chamber and Boss Enemy

Today I am unveiling a glimpse of the Orange Energy Chamber from my current game project.

Below is concept art for the Orange Energy Chamber. Can you guess which tool will solve this riddle?

Also below are animations illustrating some enemies and allies. In each level there will be different enemies with different AI and different behaviors.

The Bugbot animation below is showing a concept of a Boss Enemy that guards tools in each Energy Chamber. As the player advances in levels the Bugbot will morph into a svelte, aerodynamic, killing machine that the Shotbot must battle.

  1. At least it's easy to tell the power-ups from the enemies!
    Looking good, Lauren.

  2. Shiny power ups work for me. Can I stab the bugbot in those bug eyes? Pop the eyes and he'll be toast haha awesome job indeed

    1. Yes!! Stab away! The Bugbot eyes will tell it's state: attacking, vulnerable... but best of all the eyes will be it's weak spot, so when they are the weak color then pop the eyes and he'll be toast!

    1. Thanks! That's awesome to hear because I gave the eyes extra attention. They will be important in the game.

  6. Very cool stuff. I love seeing snippets of this, especially the gifs.

You know what Bugbot reminds me of? The robodog.

That thing is creepy as hell... which is why Bugbot is a perfect enemy. Someone get me the 'boot' attachment so I can punt that thing across the room. :)

    1. OMG, Bryan!! You hit the nail on the head!

I modeled the Bugbot to resemble the DARPA Legged Squad Support System also by Boston Dynamics! It is hilarious that you picked up on that.

I'm glad you think it is creepy. I don't think it is quite creepy enough for the later levels, so he will transform into a more arachnid form.

Ha, Ha!! There is no boot attachment but you will be able to shoot him and he'll be toast (in the immortal words of Pat Hatt).

  7. Are they neurons from somebody's brain?

    1. They are not in the brain but someplace much lower down the body.
It is the spark between immune cells and neurotransmitters trying to connect. That is your mission to solve.

  8. I have NO IDEA what tool could work but this looks like the inside of a body, right?? Kind of looks like the Magic School Bus body tour book :) It looks great!! I love the richness of the colors.

    1. OMG, I had never heard of that book and had to look it up. That is a great way to learn about the human body!
The tool would be something to close synapse and stop the sparks (fire) so that the Shotbot can pass.

    2. Oh yes, it's the inside of a body but not scientifically literal like the Magic School Bus.

I'm glad the Bugbot is delightful! But don't let him fool you or the Shotbot will go down!!!

  13. This is super cool! The game sounds awesome. I like the way the bugbot looks and the enemy is fascinating. Is the laser scalpel the tool that is needed?

    Such vibrant colors. :)

    1. Hey Jess!

Very good guess! Not the correct tool, though.

You have to stop the sparks so you can get by. You can do this by closing the gaps with one of the tools.

  14. Looking at the photos I am worried at what kind of war might be going on inside of me... I have never been much of a gamer, but this is very creative (evil a dark blotch? why not make it more seductive?)

    1. Ha, ha there are more enemies than the "dark blotch".... so don't be seduced!!!

    1. Isn't that the truth. That is the part that is SO tedious about teaching. It's amazing because as a student you don't realize how hard the teachers have to work to make it all happen.
